We have been involved in research on adoption of cloud computing in Nairobi Kenya through one of our team members, Amos Wachanga. His research into cloud computing in Nairobi has been published on ResearchGate.net and a presentation he did also published on Slideshare.net.

Cloud Computing is defined as

“a model for enabling very convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources such as networks, servers, storage, applications, and services, which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction” (NIST, 2011)

Some of the advantages expected from cloud computing are:

  • Minimal setup costs & On-demand payment model
  • Easy setup – where a user would not need to setup not maintain the server hardware, software and the necessary networking
  • Trialability – Ability to test offerings at low cost :- A user can get to test various cloud computing solutions for a time and terminate or migrate to another service at any point with lower costs than if the entire hardware and software had been purchased and setup for a particular solution.
  • IT resources can be expanded as needed :-only paid for when they are used, with minimal technical expertise to manage the environment, hence lower maintenance costs.
  • Lower risks hence focus on core business :- The service provider would inherently deal with all major risks including security, updating the software and ensuring uptime.

In Nairobi, there is low adoption of cloud computing as concluded in the research paper. The paper recommends need for Service Providers to engage more with SMEs to ensure they know about the benefits of cloud computing.

As Sibasi Ltd, our mission is to empower organizations through technology to achieve success! The identified need from the research paper encourages us with our mission and we are engaging with many organizations to provide Technology Consulting services to ensure they are able to adopt the best services through the best approaches to ensure they are successful.
